The Cobweb Spin from 1022!

The coffee start at Hamworthy Sports Club was a great success although some of us, even me, were a quite confused when Poole Bay Classics or Three Counties Club cars started rolling in for the start of THEIR run! Even more confusing as there was Rose Gledhill’s c/b Midget, Jim Widdicombe’s r/b BGT and a fine red MGC GT in ‘our’ line up that were not supporting 1020…

The 1020ers present certainly demolished all the Jammy Dodgers before we set off. Colin Sexton followed me closely all the way in his r/b B Roadster; some 1020ers were already there including the Balkwills, the Williams’ (CGT) and Mike Holloway! The sun was out and it was a dry drive there. The IBM sports club had a live jazz band which got everyone’s toes tapping before they finished quite early on as most were coming in to dine.

The Mayor on Winchester was there and seemed delighted with 1022’s fine efforts to include many other classic cars; I was pleased we’d brought Les in his DB5 for variety! With many 1020 ‘hard core’ missing, we still gave a very good account of ourselves so well done to all who turned a wheel out for 1020 so early in the season.

The Charltons took a more scenic (70 mile!) route to Hursley but got caught in a very heavy shower, hood down, stuck in traffic at Lyndhurst. There were a few pre-War and post-War MGs attending along with some Alfa Romeos and the usual raft of the MG marque. The food was better than ever and to see so many MGers out in early March shows Region 10 has hit gold with 1022’s event which is a sure fire winner.

There were MGs from Anglesea and Oakhampton in Devon (175 miles). The oldest MG was the 1928 J2 and the youngest MG driver there was only 19. Most Region 10 Areas were represented – it was a shame for those not represented – but the car park was virtually full anyway. I hope all 1020ers had a safe journey home; Mike Holloway was pleased HIS B has TRIPLE wipers!
